THINK2 Audio Columnist

  • Podcast

Friday

Friday

THINK2 Audio Columnist

An engineering-first take on recording, streaming, podcasting, and audio system integration.

Friday is the pen name used for THINK2's blog.

He doesn't write about gear as a celebrity, influencer, or traditional hi-fi reviewer. He works through system architecture, signal flow, and how things are actually used. To him, a microphone, audio interface, preamp, monitor, streaming app, or wireless system is never just a single-product question. It's about how the whole setup fits together, how to troubleshoot it, and how to let the user work reliably.

Engineering Background

Friday's day job has long centered on hardware systems, system integration, and AI development. Early on he worked on motherboard R&D and measurement in the laptop OEM industry, and later took part in building and maintaining systems for medical imaging equipment.

Those years gave him a consistent way of working: when something breaks, he doesn't guess or reach for a canned answer. He first breaks the whole system into blocks, tracing where the signal enters, what stages it passes through, and where exactly it fails.

That mindset carried naturally over to audio gear. Whether it's an interface that won't connect, a mic short on gain, unstable streaming audio, tangled monitor routing, or devices interfering with each other, he reduces the problem back to signal flow and works through it step by step.

Audio Experience

Audio isn't something Friday picked up late. From playing in bands early on (drums, guitar, bass, synths) to later digging into MIDI, effects, recording gear, and system integration, he has always treated sound as something that can be understood, organized, and verified in practice.

What he cares about isn't reciting spec sheets, or describing gear in mystical terms. Often, whether a piece of equipment truly suits someone comes down to context: are you recording a podcast, streaming, singing, doing voiceover, miking instruments, or chaining several devices together? Is the room quiet? Will the user actually dial it in? Will they expand later?

So in his THINK2 articles, Friday tends to focus on who the gear is for, what pairing conditions to watch out for, and when you don't necessarily need to buy at this level, rather than just listing a product's upsides.

What Friday Writes at THINK2

Friday mainly handles THINK2's blog coverage of audio gear roundups, buying comparisons, and recording and streaming systems. The articles aim to take complex audio problems and break them down clearly, for example:

  • How to pair podcast mics with audio interfaces
  • Why dynamic mics often need extra gain
  • How the different FetHead models compare
  • How gear needs differ for live singing, recording, and podcasting
  • What USB, XLR, monitoring, loopback, and DSP actually change in practice

We want these articles to be more than product descriptions, helping you think the problem through before you buy. There are plenty of gear options, but what really matters is whether it fits your use, your environment, and how much setup effort you're willing to put in.

How Friday Writes

Friday's articles don't try to make sound mysterious. He prefers to put gear back into real context: for beginners, steer clear of pairings that commonly go wrong; for advanced users, weigh specs, routing, expandability, and system stability together. Where things can be explained clearly, he explains them; where specs alone can't decide it, he says so plainly.

That's also why THINK2 keeps this byline: not to build up a mysterious author, but to let readers know there's a more engineering-minded, use-focused way of thinking behind these articles.
